The AFC East is shaping up to be a tougher challenge than most writers and oddsmakers alike thought before the season. The Patriots are smoking hot, the Dolphins are a playoff team thanks to a brittle defense, and although Buffalo might miss the playoffs, they’re a tough team with very solid D.
Then there’s the New York Jets, who, after an 8-8 season in 2013, have lost as many games as they did all of last year…but they’ve only played 10. Although mathematically the Jets aren’t out of the playoffs yet, they would have to have the Patriots go 0-6, the Dolphins 1-5, and Buffalo 1-5. Even then, they wouldn’t be guaranteed a spot due to New England’s tiebreaker over them and the overall competition in the AFC.
Needless to say, the Jets aren’t going to make the playoffs this year.
Rex Ryan’s team is poor, we all know that, but are they capable of playing spoiler to the other tough teams of the division? There are some trap games coming up, including a home game against Miami and other divisional games. These are classic trap game setups, and there’s no guarantee the other teams of the division will be ready for New York.
